The successful, homegrown fruit and vegetable exchange is coming to Gawler! Initiated by Gawler Community House, a new network of households across the Gawler area will be meeting monthly to swap and share the produce of their backyard (or frontyard or guerrilla(!)) gardens, and conduct workshops on gardening and preserving the harvest. Why an Urban Orchard? – To provide an opportunity for people to utilise otherwise-wasted fruit, vegetables, herbs and seeds – To create networks within the neighbourhood and build stronger local communities – To reduce green waste and pressure on landfill – To provide healthy, seasonal food for the community – To share valuable skills, from pruning to preserving – To reduce the need to transport produce from outside the city, state or country! Less transport means less fuel burned, less pollution and less greenhouse gas emissions – To learn how to make dolmades and to raise awareness of traditional and innovative ways to use locally grown produce The Gawler Urban Orchard begins on Saturday 7 November 2009, at the Gawler Community House, 2 Scheibener Terrace, Gawler. Any excess produce will be donated to community food and health services. For more information on this project, contact Jill on gawlerch [at] bigpond.com or phone 8522 4601 or 0408 084 129; or drop in to the Gawler Community House, 2 Scheibener Terrace, Gawler (old ETSA depot).
River Country Spirit Ceremony Dance the Spirit of River and Country, make the rivers flow again, and heal the Rivers, Lakes, wetlands and Coorong - Kurangk. The Ringbalin will be a spiritually powerful way of restoring the health of Murrundi (all waterways within the Murray-Darling Basin), and of indigenous and all other communities. From an opening ceremony at Murra Murra in Kooma Nation, a series of ceremonies will work their way down the river to the Coorong - Kurangk, the traditional home country of the Ngarrindjeri people. We will restore cultural and environmental flows! The Ringbalin will happen at: Murra Murra (East of Cunnamulla) on Saturday 3rd April Brewarrina on Sunday 4th April, on River Barwon Mt. Gundabooka (between Bourke & Wilcannia), on Monday April 5th Wilcannia on Tuesday 6th April, on River Darling Menindee, Wednesday 7th April, on River Darling Wentworth on Thursday 8th April, on River Murray and Darling Murray Bridge on Friday 9th April, on River Murray Meningie on Lake Albert Saturday April 10th, 2010. Each night a ceremony will be hosted by the Aboriginal communities of the area, with everybody moving along for each subsequent evening, making it a great celebration of culture and the River, and building up in size, as we move down river (along the roads), just like a river as it flows downstream, and tributaries contribute their flow. Key organisers are Major Sumner (Ngarrindjeri elder from the Coorong- Kurangk) and Lynton Vonow. Please check www.murrundi.org regularly for updates.
-- Delivered by Feed43 service
