City University of Seattle Students to Compete in SIFE Regional Competition

03/26/2012

BELLEVUE, WA. - City University of Seattle's "Students In Free Enterprise" (SIFE) team will compete in Seattle, Washington's SIFE USA Regional Competition on March 30, 2012. The event is one of 11 regional competitions being held across the country this month and next.
Each year, CityU of Seattle, a not-for-profit university headquartered in the greater Seattle area, has students at the master's and bachelor level participate in this competition. Annually students tackle issues that their community faces on a daily basis. Throughout SIFE's history, students have learned business concepts through developing community outreach projects that improve the quality of life and standard of living for people in need.
This year, CityU students focused on having a more sustainable future in five different projects. Poor nutrition; hunger; carbon emission; and joblessness were all issues being addressed in student projects. To raise awareness around such issues, students integrated marketing techniques; traditional and non-traditional fundraising tactics; and went out into the communities to practice what they were proposing. This resulted in students getting hands-on experience and two grants. HSBC awarded one team of students with the "HSBC Financial Literacy Grant"; and Lowe's awarded students with the "Lowe's Community Improvement Grant".
"To lead a team of people from five different countries with one vision has been extraordinary. I've learned a lot about managing a team of people, budgeting, and executing a plan. While doing this, I've seen the many benefits of having a myriad of different perspectives. I look forward to participating in the competition on Friday and would recommend participating in SIFE to anyone who would like to get experience while serving his or her community," said Winnie Paramita, President of CityU SIFE team.
CityU is one of nearly 600 programs in the United States participating in SIFE's competition. According to CityU's SIFE Sam Walton fellow, Kathy Cox, "The international perspective of this team is what gives our team an edge and is what differentiates us from the others. To see my students focus on issues like hunger, the environment and nutrition; and to hear what they all had to say about it was fascinating. It showed me the value of having an international perspective, when trying to tackle community issues. CityU is passionate about reaching anyone with the desire to learn and I must say, as often as I taught them about team work and business strategy, they too taught and inspired me throughout this process."
If CityU's SIFE team wins on Friday, they will advance to the 2012 SIFE USA National Exposition in Kansas City, Missouri, May 22- 24. Read a more in-depth account of the projects on our blog.

03/06/2012

BELLEVUE, WA. - Today, City University of Seattle became one of four schools in the state of Washington to offer curricula that has been certified by The Information Assurance Courseware Evaluation (IACE) Program of the National Security Agency/Central Security Service (NSA/CSS). This certification will allow CityU of Seattle to award students completing a Master of Science in Information Security, and a specialty within the Bachelor of Science in Computer Systems, with a CNSS certification.
The IACE Program thoroughly assesses commercial, government and academic sources against national standards set by the Committee on National Security Systems (CNSS). IACE standards provide consistency in training and education across institutions. Their assessment and review assures critical skills and information is being taught to students, so national security is upheld. This certification demonstrates that the coursework being taught at CityU maps directly to CNSS National Standards.
According to Dr. Kurt Kirstein, Dean of CityU's School of Management, "City University of Seattle has long been committed to offering relevant education to students to help them excel in their careers. The CNSS certification provides evidence to top employers that students have completed a premier certification program in information security that is recognized by industry and the United States government. This certification will enable our students to pursue new career opportunities. I'm delighted the courses in our Master of Science in Information Security and the Information Security emphasis of our Bachelor of Science in Computer Systems were deemed worthy of the CNSS certification."
The official certificate will be awarded to CityU at the 16th annual Colloquium for Information Systems Security Education.
City University of Seattle to Create an Urban Learning Campus in the Heart of Seattle

01/25/2012

BELLEVUE, WA. - CityU of Seattle, a not-for-profit university, announced today it will move its headquarters from Bellevue to the Sixth and Wall building in Seattle, Washington. Through this move, CityU aims to continue the revitalization of one of the region's most dynamic communities – South Lake Union – by providing an opportunity for continuous learning downtown. The first floor of the new location features predominantly student and community-facing amenities including classrooms, state of the art teaching facilities and resource centers to support students and the neighborhood. The second floor accommodates administrative offices and academic support staff. Combined, CityU will occupy approximately 88,000 square feet of this iconic Seattle building.
"City University of Seattle will help enhance innovation and improve Seattle's quality of life – two key elements of a city that can compete in the global economy," said Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn.
Since 1973 CityU has been committed to providing a relevant, flexible and accessible education for students managing their education alongside work, while managing life's many curveballs. CityU's new urban learning campus will provide students and the community with the ability to attend classes in contemporary, interactive and innovative learning spaces, during or after their work day. The South Lake Union neighborhood offers the perfect urban learning environment that modern student life requires such as internship opportunities at innovative landmark companies and a myriad of affordable transportation, entertainment and living options within a 1-mile radius.
"While online education continues to develop at CityU, the need for a physical campus to meet and exchange ideas, activate discussions and learn face-to-face will never go away. The challenges are: how does one make a school or a higher education facility relevant today and tomorrow? And how do you complement the independence of online education with the need for the human connection? By moving our headquarters to South Lake Union and creating this urban learning campus, we're able to offer students a live-learning environment that is rich with opportunity, increased access, and new ways of learning. To commemorate the announcement of our new campus in Seattle, we are offering City of Seattle employees, Seattle School teachers and students, and downtown Seattle businesses 20% off CityU tuition." said Lee Gorsuch, President of CityU of Seattle.
According to Dave Sabey, owner of 6th and Wall and long time Seattle developer, "Life-long learning is a core value of Sabey Corporation; education is central to our region's future. We are delighted to play a part in enhancing continuous education in Seattle's downtown through this fine institution." While CityU is moving its headquarters to Seattle, it remains committed to the east side and will keep a select number of classrooms in Bellevue.
Other resources:

Bellevue Reporter: City University moving headquarters from Bellevue to Seattle

Seattle PI: CityU moving to Sixth and Wall building

Puget Sound Business Journal: Job growth attracting universities to SLU

Reuters: City University of Seattle to Create an Urban Learning Campus in the Heart of Seattle

Yahoo Finance: City University of Seattle to Create an Urban Learning Campus in the Heart of Seattle

Green Technology World (TMCNet.com): City University of Seattle to Create an Urban Learning Campus in the Heart of Seattle

Street Insider.com: City University of Seattle to Create an Urban Learning Campus in the Heart of Seattle

The Seattle Times: City University moving HQ from Bellevue to Seattle's Belltown

The Seattle Times: CityU moves to Seattle

The Bellevue Patch Blog: City University of Seattle to Leave Bellevue Headquarters for South Lake Union

The Wall Street Journal's MarketWatch: City University of Seattle to Create an Urban Learning Campus in the Heart of Seattle

The Daily Journal: City University moving headquarters from Bellevue to 6th & Wall building

About Sabey Corporation
Sabey Corporation, headquartered in Seattle WA, is a privately held company that serves the technology industries, particularly in the development of data centers, education, and medical and clinical research facilities.
