IBM Robo Challenge

Posted 11th May 2010

Lambeth pupils with their robots

On Saturday 27 March 10 Lambeth schools took part in the 3rd IBM Robo-Challenge at IBM Southbank. The Robo-Challenge is delivered by IBM in partnership with Lambeth City Learning Centre and Clapham Youth Centre

The Challenge comprised of five pre-prepared challenges and a final unseen challenge: Strictly Robo Dancing, Best Dressed Robot, Robo-Race, Recycled Robots (constructing a robot out of recycled materials), Programming Under Pressure and Team Presentations.

Teams were allocated points for each Challenge and for overall teamwork demonstrated throughout the day. The judging panel included the Chief Executive of STEMNET, London Borough of Lambeth, FilmClub and Chris Stanton aka 'Mr. Flatley' from CBBC’s M.I. High.

Sarah Horrocks, Director, Lambeth City Learning Centre said: "This collaboration between Lambeth City Learning Centre, Clapham Youth Centre and IBM is exactly the kind of real world education that motivates and inspires young people in their learning. The project has supported pupils in developing high level programming, communication and technical skills working alongside professionals and specialists from all three organisations. This is a great example of a Global company working at local level with partner organisations who share the collective goal of raising the aspirations of young people in our borough."

Mark Wakefield, IBM Corporate Citizenship & Corporate Affairs Manager said: "Not only is this a fun and educational event, the children participating gain invaluable skills which will enable them to contribute to their communities, to understand the role that technology is playing in their lives and to help them understand more about how technology helps to make the world work better. This year the IBM
Robo-Challenge brought together approximately 70 Lambeth pupils who took part in a series of complex and demanding robot programming challenges".

Pupils said, "Robo challenge is the best thing for children to learn"."Thank you for this occasion this is the best Saturday ever." "It was the best experience of my life so far and I'd love to come again!"

Read the article featured in the Streatham Guardian newspaper
http://www.streathamguardian.co.uk/archive/2010/05/03/news_streatham/ 8130792.Lambeth_youngsters_have_fun_with_robots/

-- Delivered by Feed43 service
