Holy Moly Farm: Seek Members for Forming Community - Posted 8/19/2010

Truth Seeking, Food Growing, Simple Living

The place
We have a 5-bedroom house on 20 acres of prime farmland on the south end of Whidbey Island. The land is mostly rolling pastures, with several acres of old cedar and fir, some wetland and a creek. From the top of the land, you can see the Olympic Peninsula. Wildlife abounds, yet the land is just 10 minutes from the ferry and on the bus line.

The vision
We envision a small multi-generational community dedicated to sustainable living practices, with an emphasis on personal awareness, social solidarity, organic farming, natural building, renewable energy, inclusive decision-making, and a spirit of adventure. We are seeking 8-12 people with an interest in a long-term commitment as co-owners. We also have 2 rooms for rent in the farmhouse.

The people
We are three 50-somethings with diverse backgrounds in politics, farming, renewable energy, and cosmetology. One of us is a professor and the other two avoided universities like the plague. We share some meals, some spiritual practices, many ideals, and a small kitchen. And we laugh a lot.

If you sense that this budding community might be for you, email Karen at litfin@whidbey.net or Raven at ravenshair@gmail.com. Please tell us a bit about yourself & what you are looking for.

We have made a rezoning proposal to the local planning authorities (http://www.ecoreality.org/files/RezoningApplication.pdf), and have received some encouragement. This sort of development is supported by the islands Official Community Plan and its elected officials, but it will involve several public meetings.

Woolley Mammoth: Seek Members for Forming Community - Posted 5/18/2010

We are in the midst of forming a community in Skagit County and are seeking individuals, couples and families to bring their skills and joys to share. The Woolley Mammoth sits on a hill overlooking the Skagit River and Valley, five miles east of Sedro-Woolley towards the North Cascades. The house proper is GIGANTIC measuring in at about 8600 square feet, and has many varieties of spaces available for individual and community needs. We encourage cottage businesses and there is already a screenprinting shop in the basement as well as a small solar hot water business. Our sauna is up and running, and we have a solar heated outdoor bathing area (as well as indoor bathrooms). We have a flock of chickens, a few turkeys, and gardens are underway and developing. Perhaps there will be goats in the future. Much depends on the interests and capacities of those who find their way here. One possibility is for the place to evolve into an educational retreat center, focusing on the healing arts for body and earth. For those interested in living here, there are opportunities to rent space or purchase a stake in ownership. Rooms rent from $300-$500. Presently there is one couple with a baby girl and two single men living here.

Clearwater Commons: Seek Members for Forming Community - Posted 5/10/2010

We have house lots available at our community on north creek in Bothell, WA. We are intergenerational, ranging from small children to elders. Members share an intention of living a lifestyle that sustains a balance between individual and community needs and the natural ecosystem.
The Clearwater Commons LLC began in 2006 when a group of families purchased a 7 acre site on North Creek, 11 miles north of Seattles city limits. The site includes wetlands, forest, garden space, and salmon-supporting creek habitat. We have permits from Snohomish County for a site design of 16 residences plus a common house and are set to begin construction summer 2010. We are planning a mix of townhomes and single family homes having two to three bedrooms.
The inspiration for this community grew from founding members involvement in The Clearwater School located across the street. Our shared experience with the school encourages us to allow the structures for community meetings, gatherings, and events to evolve through our daily interactions.
Wed be happy to answer any questions you may have, or meet to give you a tour of the land.

Self-Reliant Intentional Community in Southern Oregon Seeking Stakeholders and Collaborators: Seek Members for Forming C...

Where high desert meets pine forest, Southern Oregon at 4000 ft.

We have the opportunity for a shared-ownership on some very in-expensive 11 to 20 acre properties in Southern Oregon about 10 minutes from Bly oregon, 1 hour from klamath falls oregon, and about 10 hours from Seattle.

The 11 acre property is southward sloping towards a creek. A state bike trail divides the acreage. There's about 7 acres flat bare to the north and about 4 acres with pine trees sloped and stoney southward towards the creek. A creek runs about 100 ft south of the property border. Fremont national forest is a couple hundred feet from the property line. Water is about 65 feet down.

The 20 acre is flatter with pine trees. Water is also about 65 feet down.

Cost for ownership is approximately $1000 per acre. I only want about 2-5 acres for myself. We would find shared owners for the remaining balance of acreage. Drilling wells for water (water is about 65 feet down).
Purpose of the shared land:
residing, living simply off the land and closer to nature
investment for future
avoid paying rent or mortgages
working collectively to make decisions, possibly share meals
working together to build simple homes/cabins
fostering community among members

Possible ideas:
solar well pump for central bath/water supply
building with local materials of stone for floors and foundations
sunken vegetable beds
shared meditation/yoga room
shared audio-video media center with highspeed internet

What's expected of you:
Initial investment for your portion of land ownership $1000-5000 for rights to 1 to 5 acres. Then be involved in the effort of drilling (purchasing carbide/diamond drillbit , welding up drilling rig, water tank). Help with surveying, building some stone foundations and small walls, possibly a central bathing/shower and water center (maybe even small pool if very eager). Help with costs of cement and possibly transportation with truck. Digging of sunken vegetable garden beds, soil enrichment, nursery. Possible recruiting of other like-minded homesteaders who can help in the effort at hand. Paying your portion of the taxes at about $5-$25 per year (almost nothing).

If you are interested in becoming a shared owner for approximately $1000/acre and living simply in the high pines then please email with questions and let's meet to discuss this. 1 to 5 acres investment preferred so that we are all equal owners. There is the potential for dividing the lot into 5 acre pieces at a later time or if you wish to sell.

You can see location of the property on Bing at: http://www.bing.com/maps/default.aspx?v=2.00&&cp=42.598374846500555~-120.9102376922965&lvl=10&sty=r&rtp=pos.42.454805597662926_-121.50409385561943_Sprague%20River%2C%20OR___e_~pos.42.695625722408295_-121.12627789378166_near%20Yellow%20Pine%20Rd%2C%20Chiloquin%2C%20Oregon%2097624%2C%20United%20States___a_&rtop=0~0~0~&encType=1

Note, the bing map doesnt adequately show the property. See below photo for approximate lot and borders. See photos on the soon-to-be website. There's a plat map we can look at if you are serious.

Hoping to find kindred community with room to rent in OR, WA, N.CA, ID, etc., where I can live cooperatively and grow food full-time for us all. I am a serious micro-farmer currently managing a CSA through 2010 and will come with all the tools, equipment and resources to develop or expand a production vegetable growing operation. I live with a medium hounddawg who rescued me and comes with the package. I am 63 and receive Social Security monthly check. I would like to rent a room or bring my tiny travel trailer and share some common space in a larger living area....hoping to connect with diverse, loving, mutually caring adults who are not afraid to need one another.

We currently co-own with another couple and they have moved out. We're looking for renters in the meantime but eventually want to sell their half to another couple (a couple with one small child is welcome too!). We have one basement renter too.

The house is 2700 sq. ft., 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms. Large common areas. Newly remodeled kitchen. We have over .5 acre of organic, garden-able land, 7 mature fruit trees, a chicken coop (sans chickens but we welcome yours), outbuilding (aka music room and movie theater) and lots of storage.

We are 15 mins from downtown Seattle (probably faster by our new light rail!)

Since it takes time to get to know folks, as well as decide if this is the right decision for you, we're renting the rooms out in 6 month chunks so that we don't rush into a decision.

That said, the last couple didn't put money down, so the "buy in" is not high (in fact, all it ends up being is mortgage payment and utilities).
Currently the mortgage is $2600 (you pay 1/2) and we ask $1600/month to cover all utilities and house maintenance. We'd love a down payment for more equity in the house, but that is not required.
Please contact us to see the house, meet us, or ask any further questions.

Devils Creek Community: Seek Members for Forming Community - Posted 7/19/2009

Our family of four (mom, dad, and two children), recently purchased 8.5 acres of beautiful land in a very scenic location near Mount Vernon, WA. The land currently has a good well and good septic system, but it would be prohibitively expensive to bring in power. There is no dwelling currently on the land, but we are open to a yurt, trailer, straw bale house, or other creative homes.
We are interested in sharing this venture with another like-minded family, couple or individual in order to share expenses, work, and lifestyle. Your buy-in would be approximately $400.00 per month and preferably half of the solar/generator power system. We currently have an estimate for $16,000 for the power system. For your investment, we would explore legal options to protect your (and our) investment. We could share monthly expenses (such as propane).
The land would probably not support horses, but we do hope to have two to four llamas, goats, and chickens. There is also a nice area for a large garden. On the land are large cedar trees, a salmon creek, a seasonal pond, and a spring.
We are non-drug/alcohol users and relatively progressive. If you have a vision and want to co-create a sustainable lifestyle, please contact us. If interested in buying outright, the price is $82,500.

Puget Ridge Cohousing: Home for Rent in Existing Community - Posted 3/24/2009

Lovely town home available for rent. Two full bedrooms; plus one additional
small bedroom that's great as a child's room, guest room or study; plus one
small room adjacent to upstairs bedroom for storage or study. Two full
bathrooms. Full kitchen, living room and some storage. Lots of light. Prefer
1-2 year lease but will consider monthly rental. Approx. 1200 square feet.
Rent: $1620/month. First, last, $500 deposit. N/S, no pets. Move in April 1,
earlier possible. (March 1 onward.)

Puget Ridge Cohousing is a beautiful place to live with many wonderful
amenities. However, first and foremost your priority should be that of
wishing to experience living in Cohousing as a lifestyle. Renters here are
expected to fully commit to and fulfill the obligations of being a community
member. If you have owned and maintained a home previously, you'll find
living here requires about the same amount of time and effort. If you have
always rented previously, Cohousing definitely requires more time and effort
than you might be used to. The biggest rewards in living here come from
contributing to and being in community with your neighbors. Renting is a
great way to experience cohousing.

Polyamorous IC group forming.

We seek to get onto land QUICKLY WITHOUT UNDUE HASTE. If you are more interested in discussing theory, other groups will serve your needs better.

Polyamory is the practice of being open to more than one emotionally close relationship at a time (sex accepted as an optional expression of the caring feelings), openly and honestly. Learn more about polyamory at http://lovingmorenonprofit.org and http://polyamoryhandbook.com, numerous other sites.

A polyamorous group does not mean that everyone is sexual with everyone else (orientations permitting), just that the option is there. Nonpoly partners welcome, if comfortable living in community with poly people.

We seek a rural area (but not remote wilderness) in the Pacific NW, ideally near Eugene, Oregon, but somewhere in OR or WA west of the Cascades. Seek to grow most of our own food, have own water supply, at least partially off-grid; probably have a few chickens, may have goats, sheep, llamas, etc. Not hermits; want to continue interactions with the larger community.

Function by cooperation, consensus, caring.

Seek people eager to be active--discussions via email at this formative stage; financial commitment to buy land etc.; then the physical and other work when on land.

Lurkers, control freaks and doormats, the socially challenged, and those allergic to responsibility need not apply.

Write petebenson@starpower.net.

Columbia Ecovillage: Home for Sale in Existing Community - Posted 3/14/2009

We are an urban cohousing ecovillage cultivating supportive relationships with each other, the larger community and the Earth.
We are a "green", 37 residence condominium development and cohousing community composed of private homes with full kitchens supplemented by extensive common facilities. The Village is on 3.73 acres that includes play areas, vineyards, extensive vegetable gardens, and mature fruit and nut trees.
Members of the community share a growing concern for the environment and a desire to live lightly upon the earth, while strengthening social ties that are lost in the rushed and hectic pace of life today.
Residents have begun moving in this month (February 2009) and we are sharing 2 meals per week with the agreement to share five meals per week in the future, especially once we complete our dining hall. We're using our 1912 farmhouse for community meals until the dining hall is completed. At this writing we have six units available. Please check our Developer's website for the most recent information on units available at columbiaecovillage.net.
