The Echelon Strikes Again: 30 SECONDS TO MARS WINS 2 Kerrang! Awards AND an MTV award!

Thanks to the passion of the fans, Kerrang! and MTV, 30 SECONDS TO MARS will be adding THREE new awards to your virtual trophy room.

The first – MTV Asia’s “Video Star” Award – was acquired earlier this month in Genting Highlands, Malaysia. What an amazing tribute to A BEAUTIFUL LIE and the support everyone has given to its environmental message!

The next two awards – Kerrang! Magazine’s “Best International Band” and “Best Single” for FROM YESTERDAY were picked up last week in London, England. Not one of these awards would be remotely possible without your incredible support and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Although we were supposed to be in Los Angeles recording our new cd, we decided to play hooky and head to the Kerrang! Awards in London. We though it important to show up and represent the Echelon on the chance that we won. We accepted the awards on behalf of our wonderful fans as they really belong to us all.

Regarding the TROPHY ROOM: This is YOUR room, as these are YOUR awards. We couldn’t begin to assume that anything we’ve earned could have been possible without the unquestionable passion, dedication and support of our family of friends and fans: the Echelon. We wish we could manufacture an award for each of you so instead we created this trophy room that will be the home for all. Now every one can share them and see what you've all accomplished. As many of you know, thanks to everyone's hard work and incredible commitment, 30 Seconds to Mars was nominated in 4 categories for the 2008 Kerrang! Awards. Knowing how hard everyone has battled to get us the nominations, the band has decided to play hooky from recording their new album for a few days and take the jump across the pond and represent the strength of the Echelon at the award show this Thursday.

We're pretty sure the awards will be at the Brewery on Chiswell St, where they were held last year. If you're in the neighborhood, come wish us luck!

A LETTER FROM THE FRONT: 30 SECONDS TO MARS / EMI (THE LAWSUIT)

To our Friends and Fans,

Despite rumors to the contrary, 30 Seconds to Mars is NOT calling it quits. We are incredibly happy, healthy and very much together here, in Los Angeles, recording our new record. Besides this ridiculously overblown lawsuit (courtesy of Virgin/EMI), we are having one of the most inspiring, wonderful and exciting times that we've experienced to date. (More on that later...)

Beyond this distraction, we are so incredibly grateful to all of you around the world that have supported us so passionately. We would never consider stopping this just yet. These past few phenomenal years have been beyond imaginable and we owe every single bit of it to you. Thank you all for that!

So, as you may have heard we are being sued by our former record company for the ridiculously oversized, totally unrealistic and pretty silly (but slightly clever) sum of $30,000,000. Insane? Yea that's what we said too.

A little history...

We had been signed to our record contract for 9 years. Basically, under California law, where we live and signed our deal, one cannot be bound to a contract for more than 7 years. This is widely known by all the record companies and has been for years. In fact, so aware of it are they that they desperately try to make deals outside of California whenever possible. It is a law that protects people from lengthy, unfair, career-spanning contracts. This law also gave us the legal right to explore other possible opportunities.

Yes we have been sued by EMI. But NOT for failing to deliver music or for 'quitting'. We have been sued by the corporation quite simply because roughly 45 days ago we exercised our legal right to terminate our old, out of date contract, which, according to the law is null and void.

We terminated for a number of reasons, which we won't go into here (we'd rather not air any dirty laundry) but basically our representatives could not get EMI to agree to make a fair and reasonable deal.

A few things to note...

If you think the fact that we have sold in excess of 2 million records and have never been paid a penny is pretty unbelievable, well, so do we. And the fact that EMI informed us that not only aren't they going to pay us AT ALL but that we are still 1.4 million dollars in debt to them is even crazier. That the next record we make will be used to pay off that old supposed debt just makes you start wondering what is going on. Shouldn't a record company be able to turn a profit from selling that many records? Or, at the very least, break even? We think so.

That, and other issues, like the new regime at EMI firing most of the people we know and love, wanting to place advertisements on our website, EMI owning 100 percent of the masters of our record...forever, and basically having a revolving door of regimes at the company made it easy to not want to continue as is.

As the result of this takeover - and the firing of over 2000 employees - we have lost many of the people that were near and dear to us at Virgin/EMI and crucial to the success of 30 Seconds to Mars. A few of the great ones are still there, but it is hardly the same company we have known. After more than 5 regime changes in 9 years you'd think we would be used to the inconsistency, but the team that took the journey together for A Beautiful Lie was a very very special group of people and it's a huge loss that so many of them are gone. (Quick fact: There is not a single employee at Virgin Records who was working at the company when we signed.)

FYI Virgin/EMI was not required to make this lawsuit public or to list such an egregiously and stupendously large amount of mullah. In fact, they were not required to set any price even close to this. We did not want to take this public, but we felt it best to explain our point of view to you, our
friends and fans, in hope that you can better understand our point of view.

We would always do our best to avoid a fight, but sometimes it's important to stand up for what you believe in. We hope that by doing what's right we can help to change things for the better, for ourselves and possibly others.

P.S. We will always remain grateful to the people at Virgin/EMI who were so integral to our success. And we hope that, above all, we can find a resolution to this in as civil and kind a way as possible.

There are certainly more important things out there in the world to spend time and energy on.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY BUILD IS THIS WEDNESDAY!

The 30 Seconds to Mars build is almost upon us and we couldn't be more excited to get started. Thanks to everyone's support and participation, we were able to raise over $10,000 for Habitat for Humanity. HFH is an amazing group of men and women and we are honored to be a part of their team. We look forward to meeting our fellow builders and getting to work. We will be sure to report back and let everyone know how it goes.

Packing Tips for the 2008 Give it a Name Festival

This year’s GIVE IT A NAME festival is this weekend and, if you’re planning on coming, we are looking for your involvment to help in make this an unforgettable event. Besides wearing your echelon gear (we suggest WHITE for sheffield and BLACK for LONDON), we encourage you to particpate– and ask that you encourage your fellow concert goers to particpate in some ways as well – here is a list of things that you could/should bring with you:

We're about a week from packing our bags and flying eastward to see all of our amazing European family. We'll be in the following cities on the following dates and hope to see you all there...

Additionally, there are some rumors abound about dates that may or may not be happening in June. We will let you know as soon as we possibly can...

We CAN say that we WILL be in Russia on the 6th of June, performing at this year's MUZ TV awards. And despite rumors to the contrary we will not be playing in St. Petersburg. We would have loved to perform for our St. Petersburg fans but at this time it was not possible.

On May 5, 30 Seconds to Mars will return to Berlin for their first of three German shows, playing Harmburg (May 6) and Munich (May 7) on the following evenings. Tickets for all three shows go on sale this Friday, February 22 at 9:00am CET and can be purchased online at www.eventim.de.

"A Beautiful Lie," the title track and current single from 30 Seconds to Mars' platinum album, marks the first music video ever shot 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle in Greenland. It is the third in a series of short films featuring songs from the band's 2005 album. (The previous two were "The Kill" and "From Yesterday," which was the first American music video shot in the People's Republic of China); both were directed by Bartholomew Cubbins. "A Beautiful Lie" directed by Angakok Panipaq premieres January 30th in an array of countries including the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Mexico, Brazil, Spain, Sweden and Denmark through a never before seen global Myspace exclusive event. This will be followed by a multi-channel and online media blitz.

Shannon Leto at Guitar Center's 2008 Drum-Off Finals

Our very own Shannon Leto will be making a guest appearance at Guitar Center's annual Drum-Off Finals, performing with California's own Street Drum Corps.

This year's finals will be held at the Henry Fonda Music Box in Los Angeles on January 5, 2008.

In addition, the day before - January 4th @ 4:00pm - Shannon will be signing autographs with some of the other drummers featured in this year's show. The signing is at the Guitar Center on Sunset in Hollywood, CA and is open to the public.

In other news the Sept 14th show at London's Brixton Academy is officially sold out! Thank you so much to all of our amazing fans in the UK and beyond for making this the band's biggest headlining show since selling out Sydney's Horden Pavillion in May, which the band still talks about to this day.

Additionally, the tour down under was simply an unforgettable experience for us all. We had the most amazing time with the Mars family in Australia, we miss you all, and we can't wait to play there again!!!
