TrueCrypt 6.0 Released

We are pleased to announce that TrueCrypt 6.0 has been released.

This version introduces parallelized encryption and decryption on multi-core processors (or multi-processor systems). Increase in encryption/decryption speed is directly proportional to the number of cores and/or processors. For example, on a quad-core processor, encryption and decryption is four times faster than on a single-core processor with equivalent specifications [view benchmark results].

This version also introduces the ability to create and run an encrypted hidden operating system whose existence is impossible to prove (provided that certain guidelines are followed), the ability to encrypt an entire system drive even if it contains extended partitions, a new volume format that increases reliability, performance and expandability, and more.

TrueCrypt 5.0 Released

We are pleased to announce that TrueCrypt 5.0 has been released. Among the new features are the ability to encrypt a system partition or entire system drive (i.e. a drive where Windows is installed) with pre-boot authentication, pipelined operations increasing read/write speed by up to 100%, Mac OS X version, graphical interface for the Linux version, XTS mode, ability of the wizard to create hidden volumes within NTFS volumes, SHA-512, and more.

After four years of development, during which millions of people downloaded a copy of TrueCrypt, it is the only open-source disk encryption software that runs on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. The newly implemented ability to encrypt system partitions and system drives provides the highest level of security and privacy, as all files, including any temporary files that Windows and applications create on system drives (typically, without the user's knowledge or consent), swap files, etc., are permanently encrypted. Large amounts of potentially sensitive data that Windows records, such as the names and locations of files opened by the user, applications that the user runs, etc., are always permanently encrypted as well. TrueCrypt 4.3 Released

We are pleased to announce that TrueCrypt 4.3 has been released. Among the new features are full compatibility with 32-bit and 64-bit Windows Vista, the ability to write data to file-hosted volumes located on devices that use a sector size other than 512 bytes (such as new hard drives, USB flash drives, DVD-RAM, MP3 players, etc.), auto-dismount when a host device (e.g., a USB flash drive) is inadvertently removed, and many more. In addition to new features, there are many significant improvements. Some portions of the TrueCrypt device driver have been completely redesigned and several bugs have been fixed. TrueCrypt 4.2 Released

We are pleased to announce that TrueCrypt 4.2 has been released. Among the new features are the ability to create a TrueCrypt volume under Linux, ability to create a 'dynamic' container whose physical size (actual disk space used) grows as new data is added to it, ability to change volume passwords/keyfiles under Linux, ability to create keyfiles under Linux, ability to restore and backup volume headers under Linux, and many more.

TrueCrypt 4.1 Released

PC Magazine Includes TrueCrypt.org on List of Top 101 Websites

In August 2005, they asked the Internet community to suggest sites that are "especially helpful, informative, or even essential to everyday life" for consideration. This release fixes all known problems and incompatibility issues of the previous version. Among the new features is the ability to mount partitions/devices that are already in use by another driver (usually an anti-virus utility). TrueCrypt can now also be run in 'traveler' mode, which means that it does not have to be installed on the operating system under which it is run. TrueCrypt 3.0 Released

This release fixes all known problems and incompatibility issues of the previous versions. Among the new features is the ability to create and mount a hidden TrueCrypt volume. This allows solving situations where the user is forced by an adversary to reveal the password and cannot refuse to do so (for example, due to extortion). IDEA Encryption Algorithm Removed from TrueCrypt

The decision to move the project to SourceForge.net accelerated the planned removal of the IDEA encryption algorithm from TrueCrypt. As of version 2.1a, non-profit and profit organizations may use TrueCrypt without having to obtain a separate license for IDEA (according to the IDEA license, any use of software containing the IDEA algorithm by a non-profit or profit organization is considered as use for commercial purposes, and is subject to a license from MediaCrypt AG).
